DISTRICT 1 ยท Austin City Council

This Is My Home. This Is My Fight.

I'm Natasha Harper-Madison, East Austin native, small business owner, mother of four, and your Council Member for District 1.

About Me

More Than a Council Member

I'm Natasha Harper-Madison, and District 1 isn't just where I serve; it's where I'm from. I was born and raised in East Austin, and long before I ever set foot in City Hall, I was building small businesses on the Eastside and organizing my neighbors to get the resources our community deserved. I didn't come into public service through a traditional political path. I came into it because I saw people I love getting left behind, and I couldn't sit still.

Today, I serve as Austin's Mayor Pro Tem and Chair of the Housing and Planning Committee, the second Black woman ever to hold the Mayor Pro Tem position in this city's history. But the title that matters most to me is the one I've had the longest: mother of four.

Everything I fight for comes back to one belief: that Austin can grow without pushing out the people who built it. That's shown up in my work on anti-displacement housing funding, affordable housing policy, and protecting the culture and history of East Austin. It's not always easy, and it's not always fast. But it's the work.

My Journey

From East Austin to City Hall

This is my story: not the polished version, the real one. From growing up in East Austin to raising four kids while serving the community that raised me, every chapter led me here.

Early Years

Born & Raised in East Austin

I grew up right here in East Austin, in the same streets and neighborhoods I represent today. This community shaped everything about who I am: how I see the world, what I value, and what I've spent my life fighting for.
